FastCAM 7 requires administrator privileges to start

We are using FastCAM 7 (v7.02.0057). The executable always shows the administrator shield and only starts with elevated privileges. We have already verified that:

  • "Run this program as administrator" is not enabled (also not for all users).
  • No AppCompat RUNASADMIN layer is configured.
  • sigcheck -m does not show an embedded UAC manifest.
  • The executable is unsigned.

Is this expected behavior for FastCAM 7, or is there another mechanism that causes the application to require administrator privileges?

Hi Ricardo,

FastCAM7 must be run as administrator to function well on windows 7/10/11 with Windows UAC enabled.

Otherwise it will not be successful with reading from and writing to temp files that are necessary for it to function correctly.

From FastCAM8, and to now the current release FastCAMv9, running as administrator is no longer necessary.

So you can take a look at purchasing FastCAMv9 subscription if there's a need to run without "as Administrator". You will need Administrator privileges to install FastCAMv9. After installation operating in normal user level is possible.

Thank you for the clarification.

We cannot disable UAC in our enterprise environment. To evaluate possible alternatives, could you please explain which operations in FastCAM 7 require administrator privileges?

For example:

  • Does FastCAM write to HKLM or other protected registry locations?
  • Does it require access to a Windows service or kernel driver?
  • Does it need write access outside its application directory?

This information would help us determine whether a more granular solution is possible.
