Hi Simon,
Generally the best font to use is a STENCIL font, as it will hold the center of holes and cut outs in place. You can download some great ones for your computer from these sites:
https://www.dafont.com/search.php?q=stencil
https://www.1001freefonts.com/search.php?q=stencil&search=search
Please Note, FontGEN uses Window's font library. So you can download these fonts, install them, and then they will be available in FontGEN.
Another thing is to make sure the font isn't too thin. If it is, FontGEN will struggle to convert to a proper double sided drawing
